For the Children Book Week (Dutch: Kinderboekenweek), the central library of Rotterdam gave us an assignment to design a public art installation for the young visitors. The theme for the event is science, nature and technique with the slogan ‘Raar, maar waar’ (‘strange, but true’). We came up with an idea to design and build a giant plush robot, where children can play as a soft playground or have a comfortable seat to read. We like the idea to make a robot that has a symbolic meaning of high advanced technology, but at the same time we wanted to make it hugable and friendly for the kids.
We made the 5 meter long robot of recycled matresses and soft fleece fabric. The button parts on its chest and face are all hand sewed. The Little Giant Robot will be staying in the main entrance hall of the central library till 18th of October, end of the Children Book Week.
