We were asked by Woonstad (housing company) to make a mural in a building that they are now renovating into 8 younger apartments. The intention was that this mural would have a connection with the history of the building. This building housed the first Chinese Church located on Katendrecht.
We wanted this history, in combination with the contemporary residential function, to be reflected in a modern way in the story of the 4-storey mural: Carp Leaping over the Dragon Gate (鯉魚跳龍門).
According to a well-known legend, a carp fish turns into a dragon when, after many attempts, the fish can swim up to the waterfall “Dragon Gate” of the great yellow river Huang He. This myth actually tells the story that by working hard, no matter how hard it is, you can achieve something.
