For CityLiv (part of Cultura Nova) in Heerlen, we designed and built 3 giant bird’s nests. The idea of this project is to bring nature back in the city by recycling natural materials. We used discarded wood to make a new ‘home’, a place to bring people together. We collected wood that was found in containers, old houses, industrial areas and many places we’ve never been. Each piece of wood led us to an adventure, each with their own story and background.
The installation invites people to interact inside the bird’s nest as a place to meet (new) people, a playground for kids or just having a picnic in the middle of the big city. The green grass carpet inside makes the nests a more natural habital and a comfortable place to relax. The bird’s nests create a playful image of the visitors who are sitting inside, but look like little newborn birds from the outside.
Each of the bird’s nests has a diameter of 3 meter and is constructed of recycled wood. In cooperation with Relim we built the 3 giant bird’s nests in 5 days. They still can be seen near the city hall of Heerlen.
