For the Rotterdam Chinese New Year Festival 2014, we designed and made two Chinese dragons as a happy, lucky and prosperous symbol to welcome the festival visitors. Inspired by the traditional Chinese paper cut art, we sawed the dragons from wood and made them in different layers for a spatial effect when you look at them close-up. From far the two lucky dragons looks like a 2-dimensional paper cut work and are painted in bright red with golden edges. The colors symbolize happiness, good luck and wealth in Chinese culture.
Each dragon is 2,5 meter in height and 3,8 meter in width. The dragons were installed on the entrance fences of the park ‘Wijkpark Oude Westen’ at the West-Kruiskade in Chinatown of Rotterdam. The Chinese New Year Festival with 15.000 visitors, is held in this park every year.
Till half of March 2014 the Double Dragons are shown in Verhalenhuis Belvédère in Katendrecht, where they are part of the interior during the exhibition ‘Shanghai Tan’ and Museumnacht on the 8th of March.
